Richard T. Broderick, Jr., 71, a longtime Upton resident, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 24th, 2018, in the UMASS Memorial Hospital in Worcester as a result of complications from a fall he sustained in late March. His wife, Karen, and sister-in-law, Eleanor Allan, were by his side.
Richard was born on June 18th, 1946, in Boston, and was the son of the late Richard T. and Eleanor (Killian) Broderick. He was a graduate of St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury and attended Worcester State University. Richard then proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.
His family moved to their farm in Upton in 1956 from Ashland. Richard loved working “The Fields” alongside his father whom he fondly called “Pop” and often referred to him as “My Old Man”.
Richard loved nature and animals, and had a particular fondness for horses, much like his dad and uncle Toby. Horse bac riding around “the farm” and neighborhood with his Wellesley cousins and friends was his fondest childhood memory.
He had a passion for dune buggies and “classic cars” and was the proud owner of a “1934 Chevy”. On the snow filled days of winter, he longed for the onset of spring and taking out “The Chevy” for a quick spin around the block and the streets of Upton. He frequently attended the Ty-Rod Old Timers Reunion in Lancaster and was already registered for this September’s 46th Reunion.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 38 years, Karen (Gillard) Broderick and his beloved dog, “Bobby McGee”. He is also survived by nine cousins of the late Toby and Chickie Broderick family of Wellesley and Needham; seven cousins of the late Joe and Mary FitzGerald family of Wellesley; four cousins of the late Kay and Ed Warren family of Framingham and Upton and one cousin of the late Jerry and Margie Leary family of Wakefield.
His funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 11 A.M. in St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 151 Mendon St., Upton. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to return to the church for a luncheon following his funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the V.F.W. George L. Wood Post 5594, PO Box 472, Upton, MA 01568 or to the Upton Fire and EMS association, PO Box 580, Upton, MA 01568 or to the St. Gabriel Building Fund, made payable to: St. Gabriel Church, 151 Mendon St., Upton, MA 01568.
