Michael D. McCarthy, 67, of Grafton and formerly of Upton, died Monday morning, August 27, 2007 in UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after being stricken ill on Friday. He was the husband of Catherine T. (Brosnan) McCarthy and a retired natural resource officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Mr. McCarthy was born in Worcester, a son of the late George H. and Mary A. (Varaski) McCarthy. He studied criminal justice at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester and lived in Upton for 25 years before moving to Grafton 10 years ago.
A Vietnam veteran, he served with the U. S. Navy and then with the Air Force, including a tour of duty with the Special Forces during which he was attached to Mike Force A302. He earned a number of service medals and was a past commander and life member of the George L. Wood VFW Post in Upton, a life member of American Legion posts in Medway and Milford, and a member of American Legion Post 92 in Grafton.
An avid hunter and fisherman, he was one of the founders of Upton - A Town Goes Fishing, now known as the Upton Police Association Fishing Derby. He was an active participant in Upton town meetings and had been a communicant of Holy Angels Parish in Upton and, more recently, St. Philip's Parish in Grafton.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three children, son Patrick and daughters Mary and Sheila; two sisters, Mary "Betsy" McCarthy and Ann Bondanza; two brothers, John P. and George S. McCarthy; a grandson, Donovan; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Katherine McCarthy-Pearson.

Service Details
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 31, 2007 from the funeral home with a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Milford St., Upton.
Burial will be private.
Calling hours Thursday, August 30, in the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m.
