Mary A. (Summers) Strachan, 95, a lifelong resident of Upton, died Tuesday morning, May 20, 2014 in the Blaire House in Milford after a period of declining health. She was the widow of James A. Strachan, who died in 2003 after 62 years of marriage.
Mrs. Strachan was born in Uxbridge, a daughter of the late William and Mary Ellen (VanRiper) Summers. She was a 1937 graduate of St. Mary's High School in Milford and attended the Worcester Museum School of Art. A talented milliner, she worked for the former Knowlton and Kartiganer hat companies in West Upton and then for Giovannio Corporation in So. Grafton, presenting a traveling vintage fashion show and creating custom bridal veils well into her 80's.
A life member of the Upton Woman's Club, she was also a member of the Upton Historical Society and a communicant of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish.
She leaves three brothers, John Summers and his wife Gloria of Duck, NC, Charles Summers and his wife Loretta of Port Orange, FL, and George Summers and his wife Margaret of Upton; a sister, Cecelia Grynsel of Upton; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late William Summers, Janet Stockwell, and Barbara Knapik.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to either the Building Fund or the Summers Educational Scholarship Fund of St. Gabriel's Parish, 151 Mendon Street, Upton, MA 01568.
Service Details
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 31,
in St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 151 Mendon Street, Upton.
Women are encouraged to wear hats to the Mass in Mary's memory
and to honor her flair for hats.
Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
