Martha R. (Wohlfahrt) Williams, 79, of Harwich and formerly of Upton, died early Monday at home after a long illness. She was the wife of Walter H. Williams and had been the Upton Town Clerk for 30 years, retiring in 2001.
Mrs. Williams was born in Springfield, the daughter of the late Adolph and Viola (Pigeon) Wohlfahrt. After graduating from Commerce High School in Springfield, Mrs. Williams was an administrative assistant at Mass Mutual Insurance Company in Springfield before she and her husband Walter relocated to Newton, where Martha worked as an Executive Secretary at Raytheon Co. in Waltham. In 1960, Martha and Walter moved to Upton, where Mrs. Williams became an active member of the United Parish of Upton and the Upton Women's Club. In 1971 Mrs. Williams was first elected Town Clerk, the first woman to hold this position in Upton. She also served as clerk to the Board of Selectmen for four years, and she was a Justice of the Peace who took great joy in marrying more than 200 couples before she retired. In her long-term elected role as Town Clerk, she earned the designation of Certified Municipal Clerk and was a member of several professional associations. Her long tenure as Town Clerk reflected not only her skill and dedication to her job but also her sincere love of people. Mrs. Williams had lived in Harwich since her retirement.
In addition to her husband of 61 years; she leaves four children, Leslie Cosgro of Millville, and Jeffrey, Tracy, and Kimberly Williams; and a grandson, Lucan Williams, all of Upton. She was also the sister of the late Richard Wohlfahrt.
