Marion E. (Whitney) Wellman

January 16, 1926 — September 8, 2013

SUTTON - Marion E. (Whitney) Wellman, 87, and Donald A. "Flash" Wellman, 89, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on September 8 and September 11, 2013 respectively. They were married for 65 years.

Marion, born in Grafton, and daughter of the late Daniel and Nora (McCarthy) Whitney, was a graduate of Grafton High School. Don, born in Milford, son of the late Ernest and Hazel (Houghton) Wellman, was a graduate of Upton High School. He was a World War II Army veteran who saw action in the European Theater proudly serving General Patton's Third Army, Yankee Division. Don and Marion married on July 30, 1948 and lived in Upton until 1987 when they moved to Newcastle and Buxton ME; since 2008 they've resided in Sutton.

Marion and Don had long careers with the U.S. Postal Service. Marion worked at the Upton Post Office, and Don in Westborough. Don had previously worked as a textile engineer at the former Draper Corp. in Hopedale.

Marion earned a Bachelor of Braille Transcription and manually transcribed printed textbooks. She was a licensed day care provider and a US Census taker for many years. In addition, she was active in the Women's Auxiliary and Girl Scouts. Marion was a master gardener, voracious reader, excellent cook, and a skilled knitter.

Don was a member of the Marshall-Leland American Legion Post in Upton and for many years refereed high school basketball and coached baseball from Farm League through Babe Ruth. Don served the community as Registrar of Voters, an Associate member of the Zoning Board, and on the Mendon-Upton School Board, Board of Fire Engineers, Military Draft Board, and the Boys Club.

Marion and Don were members of the United Parish of Upton and the First Congregational Church of Buxton, ME.

They leave 3 children, Deb Hebert and husband Dave of Sutton, Jane Wellman-Little and husband Paul of Bradford, ME, and Stan Wellman and wife Susan of Spokane, WA; 6 grandchildren: Leigh Gates, Wilmington, NC; Alex Hebert, South Boston; Gabrielle Booth, Windham, ME; Zoe Little, Bradford, ME; Kyl Wellman, Seattle, WA; and Marianne Wellman, Portland, OR; 3 great-grandchildren: Hannah and Nathan Gates and Nora Booth. Don leaves his sister, Dorothy Francis of Upton. Marion was sister to the late Daniel, David, Charles, and Paul Whitney, and Marjorie Sadler.

Marion and Don had a great love for their family and each other. They raised their children to value the importance of community service, to love the natural world, and to be stewards of the environment.
