Lester P. Shea, 93, a long time resident of Upton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the AdviniaCare Nursing Home of Northbridge.
Born in Milford on September 5, 1931, he was a son of the late Frank and Christine (Vaughn) Shea. Raised and educated in Milford, Lester was a proud graduate of St. Mary's High School before furthering his education at Worcester Boys Trade High School. His dedication to education extended beyond his own schooling, as he would later become a beloved mentor to many.
Mr. Shea notably served in the United States Naval Reserve for several years, embodying a spirit of service to his country. After starting his career in the printing trade, he returned to Worcester Boys Trade High School, where he dedicated 14 years as a printing instructor. His passion for teaching continued at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton, where he taught Graphic Arts for another two decades, imparting his knowledge and skills to countless students.
Lester held strong democratic affiliations, often receiving correspondence from senators and the White House, testament to his active engagement in civic duty. He contributed to his community through volunteer work for Joe Early, reflecting his enduring commitment to public service. He was a member of the Upton Historical Society.
Lester's interests were as varied as his accomplishments. A skilled woodworker, he crafted everything from intricate furniture to model ships and planes. His passion for aviation was evident in his love of watching planes at Logan Airport. Travel also brought him joy, and he was an ardent supporter of his beloved Boston Red Sox.
Lester is survived by his sister, Marie Shea of Lighthouse Point, FL, as well as several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his dear friend, Cheryl Ferruccio and her husband, Bob, of Upton.
He was predeceased by his newborn son, Robert Vaughn Shea, along with his brothers, Francis Shea, Attorney Robert Shea, and former State Police Chief Jack Shea, as well as his former wife, Gloria (Lamothe) Shea.
His funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, February 27, in the Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton. Burial in Maplewood Cemetery, Upton, will take place privately.
A calling hour will precede the service from 10 to 11 A.M. in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, 65 Pleasant Street, Upton, MA 01568.
Lester Shea will be remembered not only for his contributions to education and community service but also for the rich life he led filled with passions, friendships, and love.
