Hugh J. MacDonald, Jr., 78, of Upton passed away on June 28, 2024, at the Milford Regional Medical Center with his family by his side. Hugh had been in declining health for several years.
Hugh was the son of Hugh J. MacDonald, Sr. and Agnes (Connelly) MacDonald. He was born and raised in the Boston area. After graduating from Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury, he attended Boston University where he received certification in PMI (project management) and took night classes at Northeastern University in computer science while fulfilling his duty to the Massachusetts Army National Guard.
As a young teen, he worked as a caddy at the George Wright Golf Course which introduced him to the love of playing golf. During his high school years, he worked part-time at various jobs in the West Roxbury, Roslindale sections of Boston developing a very strong work ethic. His education and work experience took him as an adult from computer programming at the Framingham Trust Company to Dallas, TX where he supported the development and implementation of the ATM. Family obligations required him to move his family back to Massachusetts where he secured a position at Digital Equipment Corporation. After DEC closed, he worked several years as a project management consultant until the retail world opened its door. Here he enjoyed several years of customer service helping men of all ages dress for those momentous occasions in their lives at Men’s Wearhouse. His career life then circled around back to his true joy, the game of golf. In his retirement years, he experienced the friendships and camaraderie of supporting those teeing off at the Juniper Hill Country Club in Northborough. He did this until his illness made it impossible for him to continue.
Hugh was a resident of Upton for over 44 years. His desire to be of service to others led him in his younger years to train and volunteer to be an EMT supporting Upton Fire and Emergency Medical Services and Massachusetts Search and Rescue. He also provided support for a time as the town’s police dispatcher.
Hugh was a Red Sox and Patriots fan and enjoyed sitting in his comfy chair watching and hoping for a win. He also was a coach. In Texas he coached Brian’s soccer team and led them to their division championship. In Upton, he coached basketball.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie (Manning) MacDonald, his son Brian and his wife Heather of West Bridgewater, MA, his daughter Jennifer Moreira and her husband Derrick Moreira and his granddaughters Kaitlyn and Alyssa Moreira of Charlottesville, VA. And his step-grandson Andrew Hinxman and his fiancée Brianna Bruhn of West Bridgewater, MA.
A celebration of Hugh’s life will be held at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, 151 Mendon St., Upton, MA, on Saturday, October 12, 2024. Visiting hours will be 9:30 to 10:45 A.M., followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Upton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his memory be made to Upton Fire & EMS Association Ambulance Fund, P. O. Box 1012, Upton, MA 01568.
