Howard F. Phipps

MENDON- Howard F. Phipps, 79, of Mendon, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at the Countryside Healthcare in Milford after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Peggy A. (Rodwill) Phipps.

Born in Milford, he was the son of the late Wilbur Francis and Mabel (Young) Phipps. He was educated in Mendon schools and was a graduate of Mendon High School. Following graduation he served with the United States Navy.

Howard worked at Kartiganer's Hat Factory, Draper Corporation and as a meat cutter for Stop and Shop before becoming employed with Mass. Electric starting as a meter reader then lineman and retiring in 1998 as a Troubleman. He also served the Town of Mendon from 1965 to 1995 as a part-time patrolman and currently serving the town as Tree Warden for over 30 years. He dedicated his life to serving the public.

Howard was a member of the Mendon Baptist Church, Mass. Tree Warden Assoc., Worcester Forestry Assoc., Mass. Police Assoc., Blue Knights Motorcycle Assoc., Mendon Council on Aging, Mendon Cemetery Committee, the Roger Wood American Legion Post and Mendon Lions Club.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by four children, Joyce J. Phipps of Mendon, Howard F. "Butch" Phipps, Jr., and his wife, Dolly, of Mendon, Charlie V. Phipps and his wife, Debra, of Mendon and Joseph T. Phipps and his wife, Wendy, of Whitinsville; one brother, Thomas C. Phipps and his wife, Paulette, of Utah; 12 grandchildren and two nieces.

A graveside funeral service, with military honors, will be held on Friday, April 1, at 1:00 P.M. in Swandale Cemetery, Mendon. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Mendon Ambulance Fund, c/o Mendon Permanent Firefighters Association, PO Box 19, Mendon, MA 01756.
