Helen (Wing) Rhodes, 93, formerly of Upton, died Saturday, June 23, 2007 in Brookside Nursing Home in Hartford, VT after a period of declining health. She was the widow of longtime Upton businessman, William R. "Dusty" Rhodes, who died in 1991.
Mrs. Rhodes was born in Melrose, daughter of the late Charles and Emily (Lewis) Wing. She was an accomplished artist who earned a master's degree from Assumption College in 1967 and worked as an art teacher in Franklin, Ware, and in Medway until retiring from Medway High School in 1978. She lived in Upton for many years and then in Naples FL and in Westborough before moving to VT several years ago.
A licensed pilot, she was a member of the Eastern New England Chapter of the 99s, a women's flying group, and had flown in the Angel Derby and the Powder Puff Derby air races. She was featured in a newspaper article on flying grandmothers and illustrated the organization's cookbook, "Wings in the Kitchen." She was also a member and past worthy matron of Rachel Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Grafton, a member of the Marshall-Leland American Legion Auxiliary in Upton, and had exhibited her artwork at numerous art shows in the greater Milford area.
She leaves two daughters, Deborah (Rhodes) Andrews and her husband Jeff of Bridgewater Corners, VT, with whom she lived for five years, and Janice Fletcher of South Daytona, FL; one son, Frank Fletcher of Holly Hill, FL; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and the family of the late Mary Poirier of Upton, whom she considered her adopted grandchildren.

Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home with the
Rev. Jan Gregory-Charpentier officiating.
Burial in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton.
