Helen J. (Ford) Porter, 91, of Upton, died Friday, January 9, 2009 after a period of declining health. She was the widow of Ernest B. Porter, who died in 1996 after 54 years of marriage.
Mrs. Porter was born in Lynn, a daughter of the late Francis L. and Mary (McWilliams) Ford. She moved to Upton as a young child, attended Upton schools, and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Milford in 1935. She had worked in the West Upton hat industry and was a parishioner of Holy Angels Parish and a member of its Altar Sodality. She was also a member of the Companions of Foresters of America and the American Legion Auxiliary, and enjoyed bowling with the Upton Women's Bowling League and the Upton Senior Bowling League. An avid sports fan, she loved the Red Sox and the Celtics and was a regular attendee at Nipmuc Regional High School basketball games for many years.
She leaves one daughter, Elaine M. Porter of Upton; three sons, John F. Porter and Ernest B. Porter, Jr., both of Upton, and James E. Porter of Milford; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two nephews; and a niece. Two other children, Richard T. Porter and Janet A. Porter, and a sister, Anne E. Bingel, predeceased her.

Funeral services Monday, January 12, from the funeral home, with a funeral mass
at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Milford Street, Upton.
Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, North Main Street, Upton.
