Hawken L. Morrison

Hawken L. Morrison, 44, of Milford, passed away after a long illness on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at his home.

Born in Great Falls, MT, he was a son of William and Ruth (Malmberg) Morrison.  He was raised as a traveling military kid, ultimately landing with his family in Milford. He was a graduate of Nipmuc Regional High School and went on to study fashion design at Framingham State before moving to Martha’s Vineyard.

He was fascinated by new skills and was employed as a cook/chef, landscaper, building painter and restorer, artist, designer, and clothing store owner. He loved reviving old things and creating new ones. He had incredible skills in the kitchen and took immense pride in perfecting a highly technical bake, putting his own mark on fine cuisine, or turning a jumble of refrigerator odds-and-ends into an excellent meal.

After Hawken began writing fiction, he chose to focus on that. His first novel, though unpublished, was saluted as creative and compelling and brought requests for more from those who have read it.

He enjoyed high fantasy fiction, board games, woodworking, poker, and time with his dog, Josie. He was incredibly smart and funny, loved telling fish stories, and seemed to recognize “the good old days” while they were happening. He was always ready for an adventure and for recruiting his best friends to come along for the ride.

In addition to his parents William and Ruth, he is also survived by his siblings, Chadyn Case and her husband Paul, and his brother Kittle. He leaves behind extended family across the country and friends-turned-family in central Massachusetts, on the Island, and elsewhere. He will be deeply missed.

In Hawken’s honor and memory, donations can be made to the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society or Giving Kitchen.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
