George P. Kennedy

George P. Kennedy, 88, of Upton, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 in St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. He was the husband of Nancy E. (Churchill) Kennedy, and was a well-known and beloved community volunteer.

Mr. Kennedy was born in Dedham on July 6, 1924, the son of the late Alexander and Agnes (Miller) Kennedy. He had lived in Upton since his youth and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He worked as a machinist at several area firms, retiring in 1988 from EPI of Westborough. He also operated a printing business, Kennedy Press, out of his home since 1960.

A charter member, life member, past commander, treasurer, and adjutant of the George L. Wood VFW Post #5594, he was also a longtime member of the Upton Historical Society. He was instrumental in the production of Upton's Pictorial History book and was co-founder of the Upton Telephone Directory. He volunteered as chairman of the Upton Service Unit of the Salvation Army since 1951 and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Upton Senior Center for many years. A 50-year member and former chair of the Upton Board of Registrars of Voters, he was a member of the Upton Historical Commission, served as Veterans' Agent for two years, and was a Boy Scout Committee member for Troop 136.

An active and dedicated member of the United Parish of Upton, George was a longstanding member of the Building & Grounds Committee and a deacon who volunteered countless hours on upkeep and care of the church. He took great pleasure in the fact he had traveled to 50 states, seven continents, and dozens of countries.

In addition to his wife of 66 years, he leaves two sons, Richard P. Kennedy and David B. Kennedy and his wife Debbie, and a grandson, Scott Kennedy, all of Upton; a sister, Jessie Prentice of Worcester; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph A. W. Kennedy.

Service Details

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 25, at 10 a.m.
in the United Parish Church, 1 Church St., Upton,
with the Rev. Jan Gregory-Charpentier, pastor, officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.

Calling hours at the Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton
are Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m.
