George W. Burnham

UPTON - George W. Burnham, 93, former long-time Upton Town Moderator, died peacefully on Friday, December 8, 2006 in Milford Regional Medical Center. His wife of 60 years, Elsie I. (Crumb) Burnham, died in 1996.

Mr. Burnham was born in Blackstone, a son of the late Clarence W. and Gertrude G. (Brown) Burnham. He was a 1931 graduate of Westfield High School and, because of the Depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and was stationed in the Upton State Forest. He then worked at the former Knowlton Hat Shop and after the Hurricane of 1938 worked in construction, building many homes in the Upton area, including his own. He worked for Norton Co. in Worcester for 25 years, retiring in 1975.

He was the Upton Town Moderator for 25 years, retiring in 1989, and had been president of the State Moderators Association. He was also a member of the Upton Grange and the State and National Granges, holding numerous leadership roles at the local and state level; and a member of the United Parish of Upton, where he served as a deacon and on the finance committee for many years.

He leaves two sons, Winfred Burnham of E. Providence, RI and Paul Burnham of Rochester, NY; two daughters, Nancy Sheedy of Milford and Diane Newcombe of Jefferson, ME; one brother, Frank Burnham of Reno, NV; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Harold Burnham of Holden, Walter Burnham of Montague, Roscoe Burnham of Northboro, and Rose Blair of TN.

Service Details

Funeral services Friday, December 15, 2006 at 10 a.m. in the United Parish Church, Central Square, Upton, with the Rev. Jan Gregory-Charpentier, pastor, officiating.

Burial in Lakeview Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home Thursday, December 14, from 7 to 9 p.m.
