Frederick J. Smith, Sr., 78, of Upton, died Saturday, December 15, 2007 in St. Camillus Healthcare in Northbridge after an illness. He was the husband of Jeannine M. (Capistran) Smith, to whom he was married for nearly 58 years.
Mr. Smith was born in Natick, the youngest of ten children of the late Jesse W. and Agnes H. (Hubert) Smith. A World War II Army veteran, he grew up in the Framingham area and lived in Hopkinton before coming to Upton in 1963. He was a maintenance mechanic for Ford Motor Company in Natick for over 25 years and then worked for Lista International Corporation of Holliston for 5 years, retiring in 1984.
A communicant of Holy Angels Church and a member of the United Auto Workers, he was a fan of the New England Patriots and enjoyed fishing on Cape Cod.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Frederick Smith, Jr. and his wife Janis of Grafton, and John Smith and his wife Katie of Westerly, RI; two daughters, Nancy Durbano and her husband Tony of Mendon, and Doreen Smith-McAuliffe and her husband Michael of Upton; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Another son, Steven P. Smith of Upton died in November 2006.

in Holy Angels Church, 1 Milford Street, Upton.
Burial to follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton.
