Edith J. (Hilliard) Shaughnessy, 99, of Upton, died late Thursday, December 16, 2010 in Beaumont Nursing Center in Northbridge after a period of declining health. She was the widow of Gerald L. Shaughnessy, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Shaughnessy was born in Columbus, OH, a daughter of the late Harry and Maude E. (Bates) Hilliard. She was a graduate of Boston University and lived in Upton most of her life. She had been a teacher in Upton and Grafton and a private tutor for many years. Well known for her love of the color pink and her passion for butterflies, she enjoyed spending time at her summer home in Deer Isle, Maine. An amateur radio operator who went by the call letters W1ZJS, she served as secretary of the Women Radio Operators of New England for years. She was a communicant of Holy Angels Parish and a member of its Women's Guild and the Friends of Upton Elders. She was also a life member of the Upton Historical Society.
She leaves one daughter, Elizabeth Kiritsy and her husband Hugh; and a sister, Barbara Burke, all of Upton; three grandchildren, Gerald Kiritsy of Upton, Karen Robinson and her husband William of Grafton, and Teresa Kiritsy and her husband Todd Broberg of Millbury; two great-grandchildren, Kaylin McAllister of Franklin and Declan Broberg of Millbury; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Ruth Elberta Kearnan, Theodore Hilliard, and Richard Hilliard.
Edith's family wishes to thank the nursing staff of the LaSell Neighborhood and the Salmon Hospice staff for the kind, loving, and compassionate care Edith received during her stay at Beaumont. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the Eucharistic ministers of Holy Angels Parish, who visited her every Sunday. Service Details
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, December 20,
at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Milford Street, Upton.
Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Milford.
A calling hour at the Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton,
will be from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. on Monday.
