Duane E. Alger, Sr., 85, of Hopedale, died early Saturday, October 23, 2010 in the Blaire House in Milford after a long illness. The husband of Joanne H. (Beal) Alger, he was a well-respected local insurance agent.
Mr. Alger was born in Sunderland, the son of the late Haskell and Wava (Kempton) Alger, and grew up in western Massachusetts. He attained the rank of sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. An insurance agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for more than 35 years, he started as an agent in the Northampton office, was promoted to a managerial position in the Milford office in 1956, and was honored by the company as Man of the Year in 1979. He owned and operated the Duane Alger Insurance Agency in Upton for many years and was a member of the Church of New Hope in Millville.
In addition to his wife of 32 years, he leaves six sons, Duane Alger, Jr. and his wife Donna of Auburn, Jeffrey Alger of Foxboro, Timothy Alger and his wife Karlene of Hopedale, and John Alger and his longtime companion Donna Wrenn, Kevin Alger and his wife Jamie, and Mark Alger, all of Cape Cod; two stepsons, Philip McClure of Hopedale and Roger McClure and his wife Danielle of Manchester, NH; a sister, Barbara McDonough of West Whately; 18 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

in the Church of New Hope, 63 Central Street, Millville,
with Pastor Carl Delorey officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in Hopedale Village Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.
