Dorothy M. (Wellman) Francis, 90, passed away at home, Saturday, August 1, 2015, with her family by her side after an illness. She was the widow of Harold F. Francis, who died in 2008 after 65 years of marriage.
A lifelong Upton resident, Mrs. Francis was the daughter of the late Ernest and Hazel (Houghton) Wellman. She attended Upton schools and graduated as the valedictorian of the Class of 1942. She graduated from Becker College in 1943 and then worked in the office of the former Kartiganer Hat Factory before embarking upon a career with the U. S. Postal Service, starting as a clerk and retiring as the postmaster of the Upton Center Post Office.
Dot was a 75-year member of the United Parish of Upton who sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School. She was also a Girl Scout leader and volunteered for many years with the Meals on Wheels program at the Upton Senior Center. Even during her final weeks of declining health, Dot ended each day finding the blessings of that day.
She leaves one son Harold "Petie" Francis, Jr. and his wife Jeanne of Douglas; her daughter Mary Hurlburt and her husband Ken of Upton; a daughter-in-law Betty Francis of Upton; 5 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and several precious long-time friends. Another son, David Francis, passed away in 2005. She was also the sister of the late Donald Wellman.
Memorial donations may be made to the United Parish of Upton, Box 382, Upton, MA 01568.
