Donald L. Hebert, 79, of Northborough and formerly of Braintree, died early Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Northborough after a long illness. He was the devoted husband of Gloria C. Hebert, who died in 2001 after 45 years of marriage.
Mr. Hebert was born in Fort Kent, Maine, a son of the late Lionel and Lumina Hebert, and grew up in St. Johnsbury, Vermont and Biddeford, Maine. He graduated as valedictorian from St. Louis High School in Biddeford in 1947, and from Boston College in 1951, and served with the National Guard of Massachusetts. He was also a Sergeant with the U.S. Army, assigned to the 63rd Army Band, during the Korean War and earned a National Defense Service Medal. A computer salesman for several area companies, he lived in Braintree for many years and was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Parish in Weymouth. He retired to Boca Raton, Florida in 1986 and lived there until returning to Massachusetts in 2001.
He had a lifelong love of music and especially the piano. A talented musician, he performed with a small band, Don Hebert & His Orchestra, throughout the Boston metropolitan area and later worked as a piano player in Florida in his retirement.
He leaves one son, Mark Hebert of Upton; a daughter, Charlotte Hebert of Northborough; one brother, James Hebert of Nashua, NH; and three grandsons, Myles and Derek Hebert of Upton, and Evan Hebert Nelson of Northborough.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
Service Details
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the funeral home, 45 Main Street, Upton, with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Milford Street, Upton.
Burial with military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
