Donald S. Carroll, 91, a longtime Upton resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the UMass Memorial Medical Center University Campus in Worcester surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of 67 years to Maria (Demmel) Carroll.
Born in Hopedale, and lived in Upton primarily, he was educated first at the Worcester Boys Trade School. Where he went on to obtain a master’s degree in electrical engineering.
Mr. Carroll served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Prior to retirement, Don was employed as an electrical engineer. He started off at Raytheon where he worked for a number of years, prior to going to Davox/Concerta where he retired at the “young age” of 78.
He was a member of the IEEE organization, as well as the Upton Rod and Gun Club. Don was also a part of the DIDS-400 Alumni Association for his influential work on the DIDS-400 systems during his Raytheon tenure.
Don enjoyed building hot rods, tinkering on anything in the garage, fixing things, and traveling for work and with family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his grandchildren, Elizabeth Mendes and her husband Anders Overstrom, of Holliston, and Derek Mendes of Upton; and his sister Mary Sharon and her husband Steve, of Grafton.
He is predeceased by his daughter Donna Carroll-Mendes, who died in 2006.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, February 6, in the Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main St. Upton. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Upton.
A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11 A.M. in the funeral home prior to the service.
