Charles E. “Charlie” Allen, 79, of Upton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was the beloved husband of 54 years to Meryle (Fisher) Allen.
Born in Newton, he was a son of the late Edward and Barbara (Daniels) Allen and was raised and educated in Newton. He was a graduate of Newton South High School. After high school, Charlie then obtained a bachelor’s degree at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
He then proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1970 and earned the ranking of Sergeant.
After his service he worked for many years traveling New England in manufacturing and engineering machine sales for Brown and Sharpe and later independently as co-owner and treasurer of AOA Machinery formerly of Rhode Island, before enjoying another long career as sales associate for Home Depot in Bellingham from where he never really retired.
He enjoyed spending every summer at the family cottage in East Falmouth, Cape Cod, trips to the casino, ordering McDonald's on the app to save a buck on lunch, and spending time with family and friends even if he was getting involved with some project to keep him away from the crowd.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Robert Allen of Upton, and Lynne Allen and her fiancé Marc Waddell, of San Diego, CA, his brother Robert Allen and his wife Judy (Thompson) of Virginia and Cape Cod, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday, September 26, in the Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main St. Upton.
A Committal Service with military honors will take place at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, September 27, at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
