Carolyn (Johnson) Blomquist, 86, a lifelong Upton resident and an avid town historical researcher, died late Tuesday, March 30, 2010 in Milford Care and Rehabilitation Center in Milford after a brief illness.
Ms. Blomquist was born in Winchester, MA, the daughter of the late Roy Ruggles and Frances Adelaide (Blake) Johnson. She graduated from Upton High School in 1940, Duke University in 1944, and the School of Practical Art in 1946. After an early career as a commercial artist, she earned a master's degree in education from Clark University and worked as an art teacher in the Worcester Public Schools for 23 years, retiring in 1988.
Active in the community, she was a member and past president of the Grafton-Upton Unitarian Universalist Society, the Upton Historical Society, and the Board of Library Trustees. Her pen and ink sketches of local landmarks were featured on the covers of Upton Annual Town Reports and Street Listings for several years. In 1996, she was named an Upton Heritage Homecoming Living Honoree for her dedicated volunteerism and many hours of research which contributed to the publication of local history books, "Upton's Heritage" and "Upton, a Pictorial History."
She leaves three nieces and two nephews, Deborah Johnson of Groton, Meridith Johnson Silverman of Maplewood, NJ, Tamosin Johnson-Hellegers of Brighton, Stephen Johnson of Upton, and Dexter Johnson of Madrid, Spain, and their families. She was predeceased by her brothers, Roy R. Johnson, Jr. and Donald B. Johnson, and a niece, Susan Johnson Christena.
If desired, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Upton Historical Society, Box 171, Upton, MA 01568.
