Arthur J. Southland, 79, a former long-time resident of Upton, died Sunday morning, June 24, 2012, in Beaumont Nursing Center in Northbridge after a long illness. He was the husband of Shirley M. (Marshall) Southland, now of Uxbridge.
Born in Cambridge, Arthur was raised by Frederick and Gertrude (Freeman) Southland, and spent most of his life in Upton. He served with the U. S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the V.F.W. Post in Westboro. He worked as a press operator at Bay State Abrasives, Dresser Industries in Westboro for 29 years, retiring in 1982. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, fishing, and camping.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he leaves five children, John Southland and his wife Amy of Bristol, NH, Darlene Groleau and her husband Marc of Cumberland, RI, David Southland and his wife Judy of Douglas, Karen Mason and her husband Mike of Uxbridge, and Mark Southland and Candace of Leicester; a sister, Alice Shackleton of Randolph; his godchild, Andrea Barker of Upton; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two stepbrothers, Gordon and Frederick Southland, and two sisters, Florence and Sally.
The family extends thanks to the first floor staff at Beaumont Nursing Center for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Unit at Beaumont Nursing Center, 85 Beaumont Drive, Northbridge, MA 01534.
Service Details
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 29 in the Church of New Hope, 63 Central Street, Millville, with Pastor Carl Delorey officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton.
