Anita M. (Pierce) Handfield, 90, a long-time Upton resident, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in Beaumont Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Northbridge after a period of declining health. She was the widow of Leo J. Handfield, who died in 2000 after nearly 60 years of marriage.
Mrs. Handfield was born in Worcester, a daughter of the late Harold and Marian (Bassett) Pierce. She had lived in Upton her entire life until moving to the Whitinsville Retirement Home four years ago. She was a communicant of Holy Angels Church, now St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Altar Sodality. She also sang with the Bloomer Girls Chorus many years ago. An avid gardener, she also loved to knit and crochet.
She leaves four daughters, Janet M. Marshall of Ware, Jean A. Babcock of Mashpee, Diane M. Morrisette of North Grafton, and Merrilyn L. Lawrence of Greenville, ME; three brothers, Everett Pierce of Mountain View, CA, Walter Pierce of Harwich, William Pierce of Heber Springs, Ark.; two sisters, Elizabeth Sattersfield of Marysville, CA and Helen Thye of Grand Junction, CO; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Service Details
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 4, at 11 a.m.
in St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 151 Mendon Street, Upton.
Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m.
prior to the Mass on Friday.
