Robert Moore, II Obituary

Robert Weldon Moore II was born on February 23, 1946, to Robert W. Moore & Mattie B. Lacey in Columbiana, Alabama.  He was baptized in the St. James AME Church.  His mother Mattie later married the Rev. James B. Lykes and they had seven additional children.  Robert passed away on April 12, 2024, at the Veteran’s Medical Center in West Roxbury, MA.; surrounded by his loving family.

Robert graduated from the Shelby County Training School, after graduation he enlisted in the United States Army.  Robert was sent to Ft. Bennett in Georgia for Paratrooper training where he joined the 82nd Airborne Division and fought in the Dominican Civil War in April of 1965.  He fought alongside his military brothers for eight months in a conflict where the rebels were attempting to overthrow the government.  After returning stateside Robert was sent to Fort Monmouth in New Jersey for Dial Central Officer’s training and then sent to Ft. Gordon in Georgia for additional communication training.  It was there, that he met the love of his life, Jennie P. White.  While at Ft. Gordon, Robert was assigned to Company E of the 5th Special Forces Group (Green Berets) fighting in Vietnam for eight months.

Upon his return home from Vietnam in 1969, he married Jennie and moved to Boston, MA where he went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration at Logan Airport.  Robert & Jennie welcomed their only son; Demetra J. Moore in July of 1972.  Robert was promoted to the Air Traffic Controlling Center in Nashua, NH.  On 9/11/2001 he was the manager over the Communications section at the Boston Air Traffic Control Center.  After the tragic events of 9/11 he was promoted to Airways Facilities manager at T.F. Green airport where he oversaw six airports. He served as manager of those airports until his retirement from the F.A.A. in January of 2007.

The Moore's moved to Mendon, MA in 1998 where they quickly made a loving home for their son and two grandsons, Darren & Deion, who attended Mendon schools and played multiple sports including baseball, basketball, track & field, and football.  Robert enjoyed attending all his grandsons' sporting events and was one of their biggest fans.

In the summer months, Robert enjoyed grilling his famous ribs and frying fish while hosting gatherings and celebrating friends and family. Robert and Jennie also enjoyed spending the winter months in their home in Conway, South Carolina.

Robert provided love and touched many people's lives; he had a special way with words and always told jokes.  As a family we were blessed to have been loved by such a wonderful man who was courageous, hardworking, and our hero.  His presence will be missed immensely by all his family and friends.
